These books are made for people whose eyes are not what they were. That is the whole premise, so it is worth being specific about what has been done rather than just printing “LARGE PRINT” on the cover.
The books
- Grid type is 15 point. The letters you actually search are set at 15 point in a clean sans-serif face with generous cell spacing. Many books advertising “large print” in this category set their grids between 8 and 12 point.
- No decorative or script faces anywhere a reader has to work. Decoration goes on the cover, not on the puzzle.
- High contrast. Black on white, no tinted backgrounds behind the grid, no watermarks under the letters.
- 8.5 × 11 trim. The page is large so the grid can be large. A pocket-size puzzle book cannot hold a readable 20×20 grid, whatever the cover says.
- Instructions face the puzzle. Every Challenge Puzzle has its rules and a worked example on the opposite page, so nobody has to hold instructions in their head or flip back and forth.
- Solutions are complete. Every puzzle, not a selection.
An honest limit
The song and artist lists beneath each grid are set smaller than the grid itself. That is a space constraint on a fixed page size, and I would rather tell you than let you discover it. If a genuinely uniform large type throughout matters to you, say so — it is the main thing that would push the series to a taller page, and reader demand is what would decide it.
This website
This site aims at WCAG 2.1 Level AA. In practice that means text that resizes without breaking the layout, contrast ratios that pass at normal body sizes, every function reachable by keyboard, and link text that makes sense out of context.
It is not perfect and I am not going to claim it is. If something on this site or in a book is hard for you to use, tell me what and where and I will fix it. That is a faster route to an accessible product than any audit I could commission.
